Rowan Williams starts a debate
As it happens, I was watching "The West Wing" last night - the episode late in Season One entitled "Let Bartlet Be Bartlet". In it, the President's staff urge the President to try and shape the public agenda, rather than playing safe and shying away from unpopularity. Chief of Staff Leo McGarry puts it this way:"We're going to raise the level of public debate in this country, and let that be our legacy."
Couldn't help thinking about that in the context of the hysterical knee-jerking which has followed Archbishop Rowan Williams' interview and lecture about the Law and Faith Communities ...!
The level of public debate in this country is subterranean!
(See "What did the Archbishop actually say?")
